“This book has been a constant desk fellow of mine throughout my architectural education and work in practice.

Inside is a well considered series of chapters documenting the day to day considerations when working in the construction industry. As a quick reference supplement to my working this title has been invaluable. The problem with any architectural resource is that the industry is constantly in motion and information is constantly updated.

It is a constant battle to try and keep up with the most recent changes to policy and regulation. Which is why i point out that this book is a supplementary guide and not a bible. It does not cover a lot of the specialisms that are encountered in regard to modern day construction. That said, the portability, detailed diagrams and extensive references make this book stand out amongst similar titles.

Having long owned a copy of the previous edition, the revised edition of the Architects Pocket Book doesn’t seem to contain a significant change in content. As the previous review points out, there appears to be only 5 extra pages. Therefore if you already own a copy of the 3rd, I wouldn’t see the absolute need in purchasing this new edition, provided you are pragmatic about the information inside.

But for anyone new to the subject or thinking of finding a suitable quick reference, then here undoubtedly is your place to start.”

“The Architect’s Pocket Book is a very useful book, as an architecture student it has helped me a great deal in getting hold of those important facts and figures quickly, from building reg’s to brick sizes, door dimensions to tree heights, all those details that you need to look up on a day to day basis can be found in it, think Schott’s Original Miscellany for architecture.

It provides much of the depth of its larger cousin The Metric Handbook, but without the size, making it more accessible on-site, in the studio or at home and still fits in important illustrations and drawings. Much of the information that I needed was accessible in this book removing the need to check the larger reference books. This is where it comes into its own- easily fitting in to a coat pocket or bag alongside your sketchbook it is very portable.

The latest edition of the Architect’s Pocket Book doesn’t change the successful formula and adds new detail without compromising on the size (although the change in paper quality adds an extra 2mm to the thickness for only 5 extra pages!). The illustrations are clear and concise and labeling accurate. It doesn’t feel squashed or compromised because of its size.

Overall the book feels more detailed and refined and adds more information on construction materials and a little bit more on environmental building standards- though it still lacks slightly in this area. Having said that, the improvements are noticeable.

Would I recommend this book? If you own the previous edition then you can probably do without, for me the content is too similar for the investment, but to any student or professional that doesn’t already own this book I would urge them to buy it- they are sure to get the mileage from it and I’m sure that it will become a essential tool as it has for me.”

Reviews: Architect’s Illustrated Pocket Dictionary – Customer reviews

Architect’s Illustrated Pocket Dictionary by Nikolas Davies & Erkki Jokiniemi is a brand new book from Architectural Press covering everything from abaciscus to zophorus. We have had some good feedback from customers that have enjoyed reading and using the book:

“An essential tool for architects and builders practicing across a language barrier, but it is equally indispensable for anyone teaching architecture or writing about it. In addition to its role as a working instrument, the book is a suggestive presentation of the concepts, elements, materials, processes and tools of construction.”

Juhani Pallasmaa Architect SAFA, Hon. FAIA, Int FRIBA Professor of Architecture Emeritus, Helsinki

“The handy, portable sizing allows the reader to impress friends & colleagues at every opportunity with the broad Architectural knowledge this book imparts.”

Andrew Riley, SJR Architects, Hartlepool, UK

“The compact format and simple layout allows for easy and efficient use either in the office or out at a site/meeting. I really like the illustrations to highlight certain elements and the broad range of items covered from tools to historic forms to architectural theory. This makes it interesting purely to flick through as well as a functional reference – current favourite term is ‘slash conk’!.”
